jpegtran has several lossless tools for jpeg images. See http://www.jpegclub.org/

I have used it with a program called GalleryRemote, which is a Java application that allows for managing, editing and uploading images to Gallery2 galleries, a standalone image gallery platform and favorite module for many platforms like Drupal, Joomla, and others. In GalleryRemote, you point a config file to the jpegtran file if you want to use those functions, so it works with and without it. There may be some way to hook it into your application.

Unfortunately there is no other way with the Python Image Library. If you use lossless formats (such as png), there should no problem. Which other image processors are you talking about?

If there are methods of performing lossless edits with the Python image library, they should be put in place wherever possible. This is standard procedure with other image processors for actions like crop, canvas add, flip, rotate, and others.

Lossless wherever possible
If it can be done, it should be done.
